Yesterday I saw Sean Penn's "Into The Wild"... and i didn't get it. What I mean is... everyone I know recommended it with vigour... phrases like " It'll change you life". "it opened my mind", " it sets your priorities in order" were actually uttered. well, NO.. it didn't open my mind.. , I still have the same priorities ( sleep, food, s*x, work, leisure) and in the only way it changed my life is that it made me sit in front of a screen for almost 2 hours when i could have been doing sth else ( one of my priorities... hehe.. wink, wink, nudge, nudge) - the soundtrack was OK... but I don't need to watch the whole movie for that-
I know this is not what most people think about this movie.. and maybe some of you might want to yell at me for saying this... but I did not like this movie. I can't say i hated it because it didn't even arouse such extreme feelings in me... I just DID NOT GET IT.
anyway.. so, this got me thinking about movies i never got... you know what i mean... "masterpieces" ( as movie critics might call them) or "box office hits" that just didn't do it for me. you know? Movies that, as you step out of the movie theatre, press stop on you DVD player or VCR player ( yes, we still have those here), make you think... WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT MOVIE ABOUT? or, HOW IS THIS CONSIDERED GREAT ART?or HOW IS IT THAT SO MANY PEOPLE LOOOOVED THIS?
at this point i want to add that I know nothing about film, screenwriting, technique, camera angles, special effects, etc... When i watch a film, I expect my suspension of disbelief to be treated gently and look forward to an interesting ride... maybe even get a glimpse of the irony of human nature...
ok... i need to stop rambling... i decided to post this new thread about "great movies i never got" ( didn't find anything great about them or downright didn't understand what the movie was about)
here's some of them ( i'm sure there's more... but these are the ones i've come up with so far - in no particular order)
The Sixth Sense
Gone with the Wind
Sabrina ( both of them)
Planet of the Apes ( both of them)
Braveheart ( oops.. sorry...)
The Last Emperor
Anything by David Lynch ( I'm sure he's really talented.. but I've given up on trying to understand what his movies are about)
The Ten Commandments
Field of Dreams
Dancing with Wolves
The Lord of The Rings Trilogy ( ouch!)
Moulin Rouge!
TITANIC
Independence Day
Cast Away
Basic Instinct
The English Patient
The Fifth Element
I hope i don't get banned from the forum for speaking my mind... but believe me... I have put a lot of effort in wanting to like these movies... ( some i've even seen a couple of times)... anyWHO
Hit me with the ones you didn't get...
