Cross of Iron - Great anti-war film with Sam Peckinpah at his best.
Salvador - One of Oliver Stone's first films, and in my opinion best. Sometimes forgotten because of the the success of Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK etc.
Ride With The Devil - Ang Lee's third English language film, and great performances from Tobey Maguire & Skeet Ulrich along with a great story about moral judgement make this one of my favourite films ever.

I almost forgot, you have to try Ong-Bak, a Thai martial arts film, it's unbelievable, all the stunts are real and were done without wires & green screens, brilliant stuff, I'm not a fan of martial arts movies but this one is excellent, the guy who stars in it, Tony Jaa also known as Panom Yeerum, is awesome and i'll be watching out for his future movies.
Ong-Bak, check it out.

But before you see Ong Bak, catch up on these martial arts classics:
Five Fingers of Death
Five Deadly Venoms
Shaolin Master Killer
And pick up some Bruce Lee:
Enter the Dragon
The Chinese Connection
Fists of Fury
And Sonny Chiba:
The Street Fighter
Shogun's Ninja
Golgo 13: Kowloon Assignment (for some hard boiled stuff)
Then get these newer martial arts flicks:
The Legend
Once Upon A Time in China
Iron Monkey
Then round yourself out with some John Woo:
Hard Boiled
The Killer
Bullet in the Head
And Takeshi 'Beat' Kitano:
Sonatine
Fireworks
Violent Cop
Then grab Battle Royale to top it all off and be happy with your overview of Asian action/crime films.
...then get Ong Bak.

With the exception of Bullet in the Head, Sonatine & Violent Cop I haven't seen many Asian films.
But if you are into Asian cinema check these out.
Ringu - Original Japanese version of The Ring, 10 times more scary, I watched this alone at about 2am a while back and was terrified.
Tae Guk Gi - This is known as Brotherhood in the UK, it's a great Korean film about the Korean war.
Seven Samurai (Shichinin no samurai) - Best Asian movie ever, hands down. Makes the magnificent seven look like a bunch of p*ssies.

Scrag speaks the truth. Seeing Seven Samurai is easily as important as seeing Casablanca, in my opinion.
Here are some other random suggestions:
Re-animator - just a brilliant, fun horror flick.
Targets - Peter Bogdanovich's first film, which is only made more brilliant when you're made aware of how it came to be.
Duck Soup - a box office flop at its time, this is my favorite Marx Bros vehicle and an absolutely exquisite film.
Coffy - a great little flick with Pam Grier and Sid Haig.
Maniac Cop - a fantastic Bill Lustig horror, with Bruce Campbell no less.
Darkman - speaking of Bruce Campbell...
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan - give Star Trek a chance and check this out.
A History of Violence - just unbelievable.
The Fly - speaking of Cronenberg...
A Better Tomorrow 1 & 2 - some more John Woo, great stuff in every way.
Hard Target - far from a perfect film, and cut to pieces by the censors and studio, Woo's first American film is still important to see. And it's got Ted Raimi! Hell, it's scripted by Chuck Pfarrer who did Darkman and produced by Sam Raimi and Rob Tapert.
Maybe I'll add some more later. That was just brain spilling. They're not all solidly excellent films but I promise that they all have something interesting and unique.

The Long Good Friday - original British gangster film with Bob Hoskins who's having far from a good friday when everything goes to sh*t. In my opinion better than Lock Stock, Snatch etc, though maybe not quite as stylish.

The Butterfly Effect - Didn't particularly want to see this because Ashton Kutcher's in it (Dude, Where's My Car, Guess Who, anyone?), but I was pleasantly surprised by it, It's basically about a guy who can change the present by going back in time, it's a dark film in places and funny in others. Kutcher gives a good performance, though flawed at times. It also has two endings, both leaving you feeling different, it's a matter of which version you see. really good film, check it out.

so you how the girl said the only reason she stayed with her dad was because of him, well he went back in time to her 10th (guess) birthday and walked up to her and said in her ear, something like if you ever talk to me again i will kill you and your family, then he walked away, then it went into montage of her going to live with her mum and so on

I'm gonna say Robocop. It's a great alternative to Terminator (better in my opinion) and it really doesn't hold back on the violence. I am referring to the original 1-3, mind, not the recent straight-to-TV sequels.
I also have to mention Anchorman, which I bought on a whim and it turned out to be one of the funniest films I've ever seen.

Un Long Dimanche De Fiancailles (A Very Long Engagement).
Watched this last night, brilliant, a love story, mystery, anti-war film all in one. Set in 1920 France, it tells the story of Mathilde (Audrey Tatou) and her search for her fiance Manech (Gaspard Ulliel). Manech recieved a court martial in the trenches of the Somme in World War I along with four other men, the were were taken to a god forsaken front line trench nicknamed Bingo Crepuscule (something like that) and forced over the top to fend for themselves, anyway, it's Mathilde's mission to find her lover, whom through various sources she believes is still alive. It manages to be disturbing yet comforting at the same time with it's horryfying depiction of war and tender love scenes interwined throughout. This is a film I really think you must see.
