I searched for the old "What i'm watching" thread and couldn't find it so i'll start another

Traffic - I hadn't watched this in a long time., I had loaned the DVD out and never got it back. I noticed that my roomate had it(hmmm supicious?) so i figured i'd pop it in. I forgot how much i liked this movie. It's a little pretentious with it's approach on the whole drug wars thing but there are a lot of good messages in there. and Visually it's wonderful. Who would have thought a few filters could do so much when contrasted correctly.
Beat13
Just watched 'rubber johnny', really impressive.

I thought it was a story about a neglected child who, whilst locked in the cellar, would create fantastical, musical worlds where he had the freedom to move and dance in any number of ways. visually stunning and powerfully creative.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - LOVED it, great mix of parody of the original and expansion on Willy Wonka's character. Depp nailed it again

Million Dollar Baby WOW! The movie was well acted throughout with a good mix of comedy and seriousness.....then it hits a twist and goes a different direction completely. loved the movie but it depressed me to no end and left me with the need to soul search over a pint(I can say that because we where drinking Beamish) with a buddy

TID-BIT: Maggie was from Theodosha in Southwest Missouri.......last weekend we went on a family camping trip and stayed at a campsite in Theodosha, my grandfather lives a few miles away. tiny little town in the middle of nowhere. a gas station, a campsite, and a bridge.....that's about it. and yes the family was pretty accurate for that part of Missouri, bunch of backwoods hicks

Just watched American Pie 2 yesterday. Pretty good. Goofy fun.

Agreed.......but the fight in the "chess"(for lack of a better word) house with all the water and the guy playing the guitar-like instrument was most enjoyable
Hot Springs Turtle
I liked Hero, even if it was a little far-fetched.

Agreed on that fight scene in the chess house, though - that ruled.
makeitstop
agreed, chess house fight thing good. but story and message and ends justify means and oppression and culture of shame and slavery, not so good.

nosferatu - herzog's dracula. well made, a bit slow, didnt really like the changes to the story and characters. the plague was a nice touch though.

anchorman - stupid, funny, pretty good.

I robot - I only watched it to see if my prediction was correct. it was. quite patheti considering I basically predicted everything in the entire movie the first time I heard of it. ugh.
Antonio Montana
Road To Perdition - Tom Hanks, Jude Law, Paul Newman. Mob hitman, Michael Sullivan (Tom Hanks) seeks revenge against the man responsible for the killing of his family. Very good movie, well acted by everyone. Newman is brilliant.
makeitstop
that's one of the movies I remember seeing with a friend, hearing the first line, and saying "so, you wanna know how it's gonna end?"
Daytrip
even if a movie is predictable, which Road to Perdition wasn't at all to me, it doesn't take away from the acting IMO

i almost picked up Nosferatu but decided to wait a bit and get a bunch of the Noir i want all at once.

Baraka - Visually stunning. It draws a lot of lines between the primative people of the world, the animal world, and the modern day life of New York. It's pretty amazing how time lapse photography makes modern day life look organic and ant like all at the same time. To see this in Imax or on a good sized screen with decent surround sound would be very impressive.

I actually liked it, even though I saw everything coming a mile away. some movies can get away with that (the village was another) and some cant (sixth sense comes to mind) it just depends on the movie.

laugh.gif strange that you liked the Village but not Sixth Sense.....it's usually the other way around
Antonio Montana
American Wedding - You know the drill.

Runaway Jury - Good movie, but a little disappointed.
Daytrip
Hellboy - caught it on late last night and figured i'd give it a go. Not too bad, some of the CGI was fairly bad but it had enough funny moments to make it work. Ron Pearlman is good as usual and the characters where more in depth than usual for this type of movie(with the exception of the new agent, to me he seemed very weak with no good back story)

Santa Sangre | Alejandro Jodorowsky

Late last week, I saw two of Jodorowsky's films: The Holy Mountain and Fando y Lis (in that order.) The Holy Mountain took an instant rooting into my top 20, only to be out done itself when I watched Fando y Lis. Prior to those two, I had only seen his most well-known work - El Topo. Tonight was reserved for Santa Sangre, which is the fourth of his four most celebrated works [rarely do we hear any form of praise for Tusk or The Rainbow Thief though I'd prefer judging for myself before accepting this films as 'bad.']

Santa Sangre was a dissapointment, in the sense I'd be dissapointed in having a really good hamburger for supper if I had really great steak for lunch. In synopsis form, Santa Sangre sounds like an equal to its creator's other works. An institutionalized man remembers his childhood among circus folk. His mother is aware of her husband's flirtations with the tattoo lady and when she catches them in bed together, she pours acid on his genitalia. In retaliation, he cuts off her arms before slitting his own throat - an event that takes place before the eyes of their son, who has himself been flirting with the deaf and mute daughter of the tattoo lady. Back in present day, he escapes the hospital to join his armless mother, where his limbs compensate for her lack of. Among her intentions for his arms are piano playing and murder.

Jodorowsky's films are filled with stimulating visuals, like pianos on fire and frogs dressed as kings. Fando y Lis, El Topo, and The Holy Mountain contain rapid doses of such eye-to-brain candy. Santa Sangre's moments are more spaced out and not as intoxicating. Of course, one shouldn't judge such a wonderful film for not having the punch of the filmmaker's other works. Santa Sangre is a wonderful cinematic experience, but one to be had by pre-existing fans as anyone unfamiliar with Jodorowsky's style will find sitting through this film to be rather difficult. That, in itself, is a catch-22 because awareness of Jodorowsky's earlier works comes with unparralleled anticipation.

A very good film and mandatory viewing for fans of surrealism and experimental psychological cinema.

pulp fiction, easily my favorite movie ever smile.gif

bill and ted movies, watched the both yesterday too, also favorites of mine wink.gif

Cannonball Run II.

Hal Needham is the voice of a generation, his films speak so much of what society has the potential to create and achieve.

And it has some fit chicks.

King Arthur - Not sure why this movie caught so much flack......Clive Owen isn't his best here by far but i actually liked the movie. Decent acting by most of the cast, good eye candy with Knightly and some decent(not great) battle scenes.

Eurotrip - I was actually looking forward to this, i usually like this kind of mindless fun but this one fell short, a long way short. Maybe 3 times i laughed. Again, some really good eye candy(especially the sister, how they treated her like one of the guys is beyond me) but overall very underwhelming

I thought the performances were a bit average but the cinematography and locations were fantastic, and the costumes were impressive..

Salems Lot:

The first horror film i remember watching. It's on channel 5 now and it still scares the bejeebers out of me. I think its because of its psychological effect from watching it so young.

Tobe Hoopers adaptation of Stephen Kings novel of the same name is terryfyingly creepy, the slow floating pace of the vampires and the overwhelming power and size of the Nosferatu style Kurt Barlow, depicted alongside the organic animal sounds of the monsters makes me need to wash my shorts after every viewing.

Largely, stephen king adaptions are average, but this and Cujo are great films. the cinematography and performances in Cujo make for a very tense nail biting horror. watch out for the 360degree pan INSIDE the car, with dying son on one side and frail mother on the other. impressive stuff.

Sin City - Wow, that's all I can say. I absolutely loved it.
Hot Springs Turtle
I've heard a lot of good things about Sin City. If ever it comes my way, I'll check it out.

Myself, I ordered "Blackadder" from Play.com recently, and it should be here tomorrow. I'm looking forward to it! I've never seen it before, but as far as comedy goes, I'm usually a great judge of whether or not I'll enjoy it.
domstrom
sin city was pretty good. enjoy most of it. it's the most comiclike movie ever. realy easy to get into. and it's a joy to see mickey rourke having such a role. he's sure a reason why this movie is great.

I remember blackadder, i still got to see those when i was kid. It actually help me learn english. It was a rare english show i watched (from montreal). It was also my introduction to rowan atkinson, who i thoutgh was the funniest guy in the whole world.
I think the first serie was the best one.

yesterday i saw once upon a time in america for the third time. not leone's best but still a great show. I find it funny that this show can be so corny at times and so harsh at other times. love it. i really like the acting in there too.
Daytrip
Constantine - About as good as i heard it was. I wasn't really excited to see this but i got good word of mouth about it. I'm not familliar with the source material so that probably helped me like it more. There were a LOT of matrix like shots some almost identical in a few spots. Special effects were pretty good and i really enjoyed Peter Stormare as Satan and i thought Gavin Rossdale did a good job with Balthazar. 4 out of 5

Ghost World - It took me a while to get into this one but once i did i enjoyed it. Scarlett Johansson does a great job as does Steve Buscemi but Thora Birch(American Beauty) stands out in this one and looks damn cute (especially in the catwoman mask) to boot. 3.5 out of 5

40 Year Old Virgin - Hillarious, not as funny IMO as Anchorman but there were several times that i was laughing so hard i cried. This movie should have a more broad appeal than Anchorman, less off the wall comedy and a more traditional feel. 4.5 out of 5
Daytrip
The Life of David Gale - Great movie, there was definatly an anti-death penalty agenda here but as usual both Kevin Spacey and Kate Winslett where great and there was a pretty good twist at the end. 3.5 out of 5
Antonio Montana
I've been interested in seeing that, but I've heard it wasn't so good, so I kinda put it on the backburner.
Quackford
I just got Shaun of the Dead, Layer Cake and Amores Perros in the mail from Netflix and am going to watch them tonight. How would you guys rate them?

I assume you all know what Shaun of the Dead is.

Layer Cake is a British gangster thriller about a coke dealer trying to get out of the business.

Amores Perros is a Mexican drama about love, betrayal, and death, with Y Tu Mama Tambien's Gael Garcia Bernal.
Daytrip
Walking Tall - Nothing special here but the Rock did a pretty good job. Typical action movie, at least one car explodes and there are two or three decent fight scenes and a love intrest. Johnny Knoxville does a great job supporting as well. 3 out of 5

It's so funny to read this because it's always one and not the other with these two movie most people i know say i loved COR and hated PB or they Loved PB and hated COR. I'm in the later, i just think PB had more to it but it's strange that this comes up with these two two movies. Speak up anybody who loved both films.

It has plenty of action including quite possibly the best end of movie gunfight since The Wild Bunch, which by the way, is the best Western ever made, no arguments.
Antonio Montana
I just watched The Girl Next Door. I liked it, nothing spectacular, except for Elisha Cuthbert. She's uber hot.

Just watched Sahara, don't think Indiana Jones needs to worry.

Also, Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist, Paul Schrader's version, better than Renny Harlin's version, but still not a great horror film.
Heretic
Just watched Road House. That was some funny stuff. Entertaining bar fights, ridiculous writing (at one point, Swayze says "Pain don't hurt", while the final line of the film is "A polar bear fell on me!"), unnecessary nudity...what more could you ask for.

i haven't seen legally blonde for quite some time maybe ill pop it on dvd later when i get home...
