I like your list Chief...different from your average Joe's list anyway - not that I agree with all choices(Shawshank

)
Good to see you ranking A New Hope and It's A Wonderful Life so highly though

Cheers lee,
Yeah The Shawshank Redemption has is critics, Leonard Maltin said it was "Terribly overlong, hollow and predictable".
I dissagree, completely, but wouldn't life be boring if we all liked the same thing.
To fess up a real truth, I've never seen the 'Godfather Trilogy' and I have no intention of watching them.

Otherwise, I could happily sit and spend the weekend in front of my TV watching your list.

Didn't even notice the "thes"!
Why won't you watch the Godfather movies? They make for sublime cinema....few '18' (or 'R') movies have such a broad range of appeal...

This will turn into one of those 'I'll get me coat' moments.
I've read a tonne of reviews, not one bad.
It's not that I won't watch them, It's just I have no interest in them.
I can't explain, normally, I would bend over backwards to watch one film rated so highly, let alone three, but, and the more I think about this at the moment, it horrifies me that, I could live the rest of my life and never watch The Godfather trilogy.
If someone lent them to me, I would watch them.

E.T.
Seven Samurai
Schindler's List
The Godfather
All the Presidents Men
The Godfather II
Singing In the Rain
Paths of Glory
Wild Strawberries
The Graduate
ET to me is the definition of what movie magic is.. The movie is so surreal and heart felt that I can't help but be swept away in the story and my imagination runs wild for days afterwards. Also the atmosphere in this film is especially note worthy. Many times I see movies that depicts every day suburbs, but the errie way this movie is filmed it really opens the imagination to the ideas of what might be going on in your neighborhood forest. I can't say enough good things about ET and I know there are a lot of haters out there, but I just feel sorry for them, cause they are missing out on one of the greatest experiences any one could ever have

Yeah it is a shame that JFK is always brought up as the great political thriller when All the Presidents Men is a far superior film IMO. I can't believe the tension it creates! The main reason I want to be a jounalist

Just an amazing job on all ends

You don't like Part III?! I'm amazed that it gets such a slating from so many people...aside from the nepotism(Spohia Coppola was a terrible female lead) and the bizarre absence of Robert Duvall, Godfather 3 remains a beautifully made picture that perfectly captures the nature of Michael Corleone in his later years...while continuing to explore the themes raised in the earlier films

I do agree that I loved the study of Michael in the film, but everything else about the film seemed so second rate. It is still better than most films, but IMO not worthy of the Godfather title. 1 & 2 are just perfect and seeing the third film seems like I am watching a film by a different director. I can't think of a good example, but the third film seemed to have a completely forign feel to it compared to the first two

The Matrix
Fight Club
Vanilla Sky (I know... everybody hates that movie)
Casablanca
The Great Dictator (Charlie Chaplin)
The Matrix Reloaded
Citizen Kane
All quiet on the Western Front (1930)
We were Soldiers
Birth of a Nation (Only from a historical point of view). This film is very offensive because it is suppoused to be based on historical events from the United States Civil War... but it is not... it is filled with lies that are intented to persuade the viewer that racism is good and necessary. It portrays slaves as happy people, and freed slaves as savage & depraved animals.
From the technical aspec this film revolutionized the filmaking industry... many techniques used for the first time then, are still being used today.
Another important aspect of this film it was the most powerful recruiting tool used by the KKK (a racist organization in the US) durign 1915. That organization grew so powerful that by 1920, most U.S. citizes were affiliated to it. Saddly, this organization still exists today, thank God that it is not that powerful anymore. But going back to the film... it shows how a movie can move an entire nation... even if it is in the wrong direction.

I have to say, I thought We Were Soldiers was dire.
But anyway..my list. Wow, this is really hard, so try not to make too many judgements of me, I'm missing loads of great films out!
Matrix, The
Donnie Darko
Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, The
Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, The
Terminator 2: Judgement Day
Star Wars IV: A New Hope
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Schindler's List
Sixth Sense, The
Shawshank Redemption, The
I guess my list is pretty weird. Lots of typical Box Office hits at the top, and some more subtler ones at the bottom. Hmm. A lot I had to cut though, including Platoon, Memento, Toy Story 2 (no joke), Gladiator, Fight Club and American Beauty.
Oh can I also add that The Godfather: Part III is the only Godfather film I've seen, and I think it's pretty good, especially near the end, though not amazing.
the anomaly
Sep 12 2003, 10:08 PM
ive been thinking long and hard about this thread an heres my list
Braveheart(cause im scottish)
Fightclub
hamburger hill
killing fields,the
dumb n dumber
se7en
matrix,the(just to piss lee off)
usual suspects,the
omega man,the
blair witch project,the
this list would probably be different if i wrote it yesterday or tommorow because of changes of mood but i tried to list films that have had the most emotional impact(be it funny or serious)i also beleive that these are some of the films that have re- watch value in that you can find something you didn't notice before
i also want to explain two choices that may puzzle some people
the reason i chose the omega man is that i always wondered(as a child)what it would be like to live in an empty world(devoid of people)and the omega man does a far better job of this than 28 days later ever could
and also the killing fields as i read the book and it inspired me to find out more about this forgotten conflict that was over shadowed by vietnam.the film lost some of the impact of the book but it was still superb
this list is in no particular order by the way

Bana while your taste in games is impeccable I must say that there are only 3 movies, maybe 4(as I think FOTR is ok) that I actually like....
Both you and the Anomaly are turning this into a labour of hate!
13 Days is a decent movie though, a rarity in Costner's career

I've seen plenty of classics such as 12 Angry Men, The Third Man, Blade Runner etc...but I haven't really seen them enough times or recently to put them in my list, you know? It's like Operation Flashpoint probably wouldn't make my top 10 games as I've only played half.

It does take a little adjustment when considering the classics of bygone years. Read film history(Technical advancements, use of narrative devices, cinematographical developments and so on... examine the 'purposes' and philosophies of the films in question(esp within the context of their own time as well their Universal relevance) and you'll come to a much deeper and more rewarding appreciation of them. That's how I spend my time at Uni!

the ps1 version was excellent but s.o.l was just ludicrous

so i guess it's safe to say Metal Gear Solid is a lot better, judging from the anomaly's sublist.
