Introduction:

We've watched them and anxiously awaited the sequels impatiently. Movie Trilogies! (or series)

It takes a good director to make an awesome film that the public absolutely loves... It takes a great director to be able to continue that story through other movies and continue to keep the publics interest and not suffer the horrible fate of most movie series.

There Is No Spoon's Top Movie Trilogy:

The Star Wars Original Trilogy

(IMG:http://binarybonsai.com/images/starwarsposter.jpg)

Director: George Lucas (Star Wars), Irvin Kershner (Empire Strikes Back), Richard Marquand (Return of the Jedi)
Starring: Mark Hamil, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher
Released: 1977, 1980 ,1983
Plot: A galactic fairytale following a farmboy's pursuit of knowledge of the force and the peril the galaxy is in

It took that dinky little tool shed that was hollywood and turned it into a mansion. Star Wars paved the way for all of the films to date these past 30 years since its premiere on the big screen. George Lucas' masterpiece is exactly that, a work of creative art. Never before had anyone seen anything remotely close to that of Star Wars and every film since then has been trying to imitate it.

Since this topic is about trilogies I will talk more about the connections between the films then the films themselves. What defines a great movie trilogy is its ability to survive past the first film. The majority of the horrible trilogies were a good first movie followed by 2 horrible sequels. With Star Wars it went no where but up!

It took the form of a 3 Act play rather than a movie with 2 different storylines following it. Act 2, the middle, the 2nd film, whatever you want to call it... Empire Strikes Back defied the critics who foretold its disaster. Even Empire Strikes Back director Irvin Kershner stated that "due to the success of Star Wars, a sequel could never be anything more than just a sequel." He was proved wrong with Empire Strikes Back topping the profits of Star Wars and providing faith that the third part of the trilogy would be a cinematic film that couldn't be missed.

There are so many plot lines that exsist and stay suspended throughout all 3 movies until their final resolution at the end of Return of the Jedi. One of these lines are the love story developing between Leia Organa and Han Solo. It was subtle at times and never became so blatant that it turned the movies into a love story. There was also luke's constant struggle within himself dealing with his father as well as the over all peril of the galaxy at the hands of the evil Galactic Empire. These plot lines flow so smoothly through all 3 movies that you feel as if you are infact watching 1 long movie... but at the same time you can watch any of the 3 on their own and feel satisfied with the film.

Star Wars has changed hollywood... that can't be denied... and as a trilogy it has also changed the way we think about movies.

Lord of the Rings
The Matrix
Blade
Jurassic Park
Die Hard
Man With No Name
Back To The Future

So, after all that, its over to you guys. Which are your favorites? Which ones did you despise? Do you agree with my views on the original Star Wars Trilogy? This is your turn to put me in my place and tell me, that hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side

lucky...

I must say, I think the LOTR trilogy is my favorite of the ones listed. Although that is related to my sister/ex-girlfriend being an absolute LOTR fanatic, and the fun times we've had with those movies, so it' not entirely fair.

I honestly think star wars gets the benefit of nostalgia, and is far better in my memory than on film, which is part of why I haven't watched the original trilogy in a decade, and why I'm happy to stick to the video games for my star wars entertainment.

The trilogy I have been dying to see for years is the samurai trilogy. I'm a big fan of Mifune, and I have heard nothing but good things. I'm hoping to get my hands on them sometime in the next couple of months, whenever I can find the time.

Also, don't forget indianna jones.

The Highlander trilogy??
Ok I suppose 2 was a waste of space and 3 didnt even stick to the main story line but.... number 1 is a classic (IMG:http://www.cinephiliacs.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

And with the release of pirates of the cribbean 3 due out this year -Im hoping for a good result. Number 1 is fabulous, Its fast, quirky, funny and stands out, but number 2 was an awful let down with no real ending - more like a "go between"

And where would life be with out Indiana Jones (IMG:http://www.cinephiliacs.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Though not necesarily a trilogy but 3 of a kind.

Terminators. That should have terminated after just the 2. (IMG:http://www.cinephiliacs.com/forums/style_emoticons/default/coffee1.gif)

So many trilogys, so little time.

However, probably my most watched trilogy is...

(IMG:http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v665/benjigeekboy/evildeadtril.jpg)

The Evil Dead: Kids in a cabin in the woods, possesions, one liners, decapitations and even an evil woman raping tree, yep, it can only be The Evil Dead. Not exactley family viewing but these have become the staple diet of any horror and gore fan over the years. It also gave the world the genius of the mighty chin himself, Bruce Campbell.

Evil Dead II: Dead By Dawn: More of the same but with everything ramped up to 11. More gore, more jokes, a chainsaw for a hand and an ending that left everyone (well ok, some) crying out for more. This is where the 'Comedy' came into this 'Horror/Comedy' franchise. Although its not for everyone, this is arguably the best film in the trilogy.

Army Of Darkness: The Medieval Dead: If seen as a horror film it fails, but take a step back and just watch it for the sake of watching it, its turns into a film of pure comic genius. Sam Raimi and co go all out slapstick in this outing of the adventures of Ash Williams with there obvious love of The Three Stooges coming to the fore. Bruce Campbell is on top form here playing the hero Ash and the demonic Evil Ash. More one liners than you can shake a stick at and two different endings depeding on which version you see. Brilliant. Now, give me some sugar baby!

SEENOEVIL also recomends these trilogys (and suspects that most will raise an eyebrow):

Ginger Snaps
Once Upon A Time In China
Young & Dangerous
Infernal Affairs
Three Colours (Red, White and Blue)
Shark Attack (especially 3, which stars John Barrowman. Who? Never mind)
Basket Case
Sleepaway Camp

SEENOEVIL's list of films that would have got a mention and also have their various sequels, but have gone into the relms of dead horse beating with so many movies in the franchise its ridiculous:

Friday 13th (11 if we count Freddy Vs Jason)
Halloween (the upcoming remake will make 10... thus far)
James Bond (21 with the much improved Casino Royale, so maybe not so much of the 'dead horse beating' here)
Hellraiser (I stopped counting a looooooong time ago, especially when they did The Prophecy/Hellraiser crossover... awful and wrong)
Babycart aka Lone Wolf & Cub (6, and how brilliant they are, however, even I raised an eyebrow at the machine gun in feudal Japan)

There are so many others but these are the ones that have pride of place here at SNE Towers.

I must admit to loving a decent trilogy: Lord of the Pings is a fave with Evil Dead up there also.

I'm still waiting for these two beauties to be released: Dnevnoy dozor & Nochnoy dozor 3
